The Acting Studio New York offers actors a range of acting classes at all levels, from the beginners' entry level through the advanced, seasoned professional actor. Acting classes are offered under headings of acting, on-camera acting and auditioning, voice-over workshop, voice/speech development, foreign-accent reduction, movement and physical acting technique, as well as private coaching in all areas of acting, auditioning, playwriting, directing and public speaking. Acting class applicant's placement is determined by interview with the Studio director who has each students best interest at heart.






This class is a concentrated introduction to Sanford Meisner's approach to developing basic acting skills following a step-by-step progression of exercises that develop the actor's ability to live organically moment by moment under imaginary circumstances. This acting class covers the beginning Meisner techniques from word repetition through their first application to a scene and serves as a studio audition for people new to acting. It is by far the best beginner acting class in New York City. It is a pre-requisite for admission to The Acting Conservatory Program. Requires outside practice with a partner twice a week.

Six-Week Acting Conservatory is a rigorous, intensive program for students seeking to commit to 6-weeks of the highest level of training offered in New York designed to begin their development into well-grounded, professional artists capable of acting in film, television, and theatre. IN-PERSON & HYBRID
This on-camera commercial audition class trains actors in the essential skills needed to succeed in commercial, film, and television auditions. Actors work on commercial copy, cold readings, one-liners, dialogue, and improvisations, all designed to help them show personality, confidence, and craft on camera and stand out in competitive casting situations.

Creative Reset w/ Andrea Navedo - Online is designed for artists who want to pause, reassess, and realign—whether at the start of their career or at any moment when clarity feels needed. Rather than beginning with strategy or outcomes, the work starts by reconnecting you to why you create. From that place, you can build a supportive structure around your creative life—so your path forward feels sustainable, meaningful, and true.
This small, intensive class, limited to eight students, is designed for non-native English speakers and bilingual individuals, including actors and business professionals, who wish to reduce strong native language accents and speak English with greater clarity and confidence. It is taught by an ESL-certified instructor; online or in-person one on one instruction is also available.

ROME, CAIRO and HAMBURG MASTER CLASSES wiith JAMES PRICE in MEISNER TECHNIQUE (Levels 1 & 2) and SCENE STUDY REHEARSAL TECHNIQUE CLASS offers concentrated instruction that introduces students to Sanford Meisner's system of training actors in developing basic acting skills following a step-by-step progression of exercises and based in acting principle that will promote developing the actor's ability to live organically, moment by moment, under imaginary circumstances. These acting classes cover the beginning Meisner techniques from word repetition through their first application to a scene. Merit Scholarships are awarded select students at the end of the workshops.
This on-going workshop class is structured to combine serious training in a playful and creative environment. It is a great place for young people to enter the world of acting. In the class, they will develop skills and growth through learning and playing theatre games, practicing the Meisner technique acting exercises for which the Studio is known, working on scenes from plays, films, and television, and meeting like-minded peers.

This six week Meisner Summer Intensive acting class is a "summer-only," intensive that meets three times per week. It is exactly the same curriculum and instruction as our "Introduction to Meisner-Acting Technique" class (10-weeks). Meisner Summer Intensive covers the beginning Meisner techniques from word repetition through the first application of the techniques to a scene. It is an excellent starting point for beginner actors.

Technique 1 class is the continuation of the Meisner technique training and follows through to its completion. The acting class begins with scene work in a brief review of the beginning techniques of Meisner's work as taught in the Intro to Meisner - Acting For Beginners class. It then advances to emotional preparation and proceeds to doing extensive exercises, scenes and improvisations over a period of nine months.

Technique 2 is the second level of The Acting Conservatory Program. This class is an application of the Meisner technique to the rehearsal process and a more in-depth analysis of character and dramatic text. This class also includes advanced voice and speech work taught by staff associates in addition to the acting and scene work. The aim is to broaden the actor’s overall understanding of the relationship between technique and acting in regard to achieving specific artistic goals. Through scene work, the actor gains an in-depth look at the organic and analytical aspects of the rehearsal process.

The Studio offers personalized private sessions for actors preparing for BFA and MFA auditions. Actors work closely with experienced Studio professionals who guide them in choosing and preparing audition material that reflects their individuality and strengths. Grounded in the Meisner Technique, the work supports honest, spontaneous behavior and helps actors feel confident, present, and prepared as they step into the audition room. This program is intended for actors with prior training who are seeking thoughtful, professional level guidance.
Monologue Audition class is designed solely for the preparation of monologue audition material. This class is for actors who are actively auditioning and in need of audition material to show agents, casting directors, and/or theatre companies. There will be a final presentation to an industry professional for feedback at the end of the session. The Monologue Audition class is offered only in-person instruction.

Movement for Actors is for anyone from absolute beginners with no prior movement or dance training to rhythm masters getting back to basics. Tempo and rhythm is as integral a part of storytelling and the craft of acting as it is in life. Every movement has a meaning of its own and a reason for occuring as well as its own tempo and rhythm based on the action being excuted and the circumstances under which it occurs. Understanding how movement and physicality can enhance and support storytelling on stage or in film is one main goal of the class.
Actor Lawrence Gilliard Jr (The Wire, The Walking Dead, The Deuce, Gangs of New York, Army Wives, etc.) brings his thirty-plus years acting experience to teaching new actors what to expect and how to navigate their way around that first-day experience of working on a film or television set. Participants in this intensive will learn the behind-the-scene fundamentals and gain invaluable insights into the acting industry in preparation to be ready for their first day on-set experience. "The readiness is all."

This Performance Workshop / Industry Showcase is taught by Studio associate director John Grabowski and is the third and final level of The Acting Conservatory Program. It is the culmination of the Intro To Meisner, Meisner Techniques 1 & 2, Voice & Speech 1&2, Stage Violence, Singing for Actors, and Monologue Workshop class work completed prior and during the study periods of Levels 1 and 2. Performance Workshop / Industry Showcase leads to a fully produced graduation project "Industry Acting Showcase" presented to the the public and invited Industry professionals including agents, managers and and casting directors in public performances.

In all areas of acting, audition preparation, public speaking, directing, and playwriting, The Acting Studio – New York offers private coaching for actors working on theatre, film, and television roles, as well as for those preparing auditions. Coaching is also available for monologue and scene study classwork, voice and speech, accent reduction, and MFA graduate program preparation. Business professionals may also work with the Studio on public speaking, presentation skills, and foreign accent reduction.
Please note, all individuals who work at the Studio are required to complete an application, and the Studio does not teach acting through private one on one sessions.

Scene Study / Rehearsal Technique is an advanced hybrid class that focuses not only on scene work, but on how an actor is actually working. Created and taught by James Price, founding director of The Acting Studio – New York and a close friend and protégé of Sanford Meisner, this class reflects a lifetime of teaching, directing, and working with actors at the highest professional level and offers a first generation Meisner based rehearsal process not taught elsewhere.

Very few actors know what to do with their script beyond just memorizing their lines. While knowing your lines is important, it is only about 5% of the work an actor needs to do. This class focuses on the other 95% of the actors work in regard to understanding how to analyze the text, and make acting choices which become the foundation of their performance.

Singing for Actors is a fun introduction to singing. Singing is a task that actors will definitely be required to do in various acting roles, and this class is uniquely designed to take the fear out of singing for actors who do not consider themselves to be singers. In this class, the instructor meets each student at his/her own level. In a matter of a few weeks each student will perform their singing role in an ensemble song usually drawn from a repertoire of musical theatre and one suitable for the group collectively.

The Acting Conservatory Program offers our full MEISNER TECHNIQUE TRAINING on a part-time basis in a conservatory setting with Chelsea Repertory Company for those working in the real world. The program is a prescribed, 3-phase, part-time, conservatory course of study for instrument development, beginning with the study of basic Meisner techniques, then applying them to the creative rehearsal process and finally presenting them in performance in conjunction with Chelsea Repertory Company. Most acting classes meet twice a week at each of these levels and outside rehearsal time is required. Most students who have to work for their living choose this program in which to study over a longer period of time.

Voice / Speech class focuses on voice development exercises for the first 45-60 minutes and focuses on proper speech clarity development for another hour. The voice training exercises help the actor to eliminate existing throat tensions and covers relaxation, breath support, sound connection, and sound release and then continues with the development of mask resonance, vocal ring, resonance blending, range enhancement, and articulation. The end result is a personal regimen of vocal warmup exercises to be practiced by the actor each day.

Voice-over Workshop - level 1 introduces students to the fundamentals of voice-over work - from using the breath effectively to creating an interesting and fun range of characters. The primary focus of the class will involve a hands-on workshop approach to training the student to work with commercial copy, narration, dramatic and comedic scripts.
