Scene Study / Rehearsal Technique is an advanced hybrid class that examines not only scene work, but how an actor is actually working. Created and taught by James Price, founding director of The Acting Studio – New York and a close friend and protégé of Sanford Meisner, this class reflects a lifetime of teaching, directing, and working with actors at the highest professional level. Mr. Price teaches this approach internationally. This class represents a rare opportunity to study a first generation Meisner based rehearsal process that is not taught elsewhere.
In addition to his work with Meisner, Mr. Price studied extensively with Tony Award winning director Vivian Matalon, who trained with Meisner from 1948 to 1950 and later served on the Studio faculty for eight years. Much of what is taught in this class is informed by Matalon’s approach to directing, rehearsal, and actor process, making this work equally valuable for directors seeking to deepen their ability to guide actors toward truthful, playable behavior.

What distinguishes this class is its precise focus on where and how the Meisner Technique is applied inside rehearsal and scene work. While Meisner’s principles are widely taught, their practical use in developing believable, sustained reality is rarely addressed in a practicable way. This class exists because actors often work hard without seeing meaningful improvement, not from lack of talent or effort, but from the absence of a usable process.
This is a hands on, stop and go, do it again approach. Actors remain with their material long enough to build real craft, discipline, and specificity, bringing scenes to performance level rather than presenting them once or twice in class and moving on to new material. The focus is equally on the playwright, the given circumstances, interpretation, character, and on the actor’s habits, listening, behavior, and ability to sustain truth over time.
This class represents a distilled body of knowledge and is intended for serious actors and directors who are ready to deepen their work beyond surface exploration. Participants may be invited to bring their work to performance level for possible inclusion in Chelsea Rep Lab evenings and Studio open class forums.
Not for beginning actors. Prior Meisner technique training is not required, but always encouraged.| Session: | Term | Instructor | Day | Hours | Begins | Fee | Status |
