MFA Audition Preparatory Package

The Acting Studio New York offers a focused series of private sessions designed to guide actors preparing for BFA and MFA auditions. You will work with a team of experienced Studio professionals who will lead you step by step through this demanding and highly competitive process.
- • You will receive expert guidance in selecting appropriate audition material. Thoughtful material selection is essential, as most professional training programs require a contemporary monologue, a classical monologue in verse, and sixteen bars of a song. Actors are also strongly advised to prepare two alternate monologues that clearly contrast their primary selections.
- • Our coaches bring deep knowledge of contemporary work, modern classics, classical texts, and musical theatre. Working with multiple instructors allows you to develop a repertoire of monologues and a song that highlight your individuality as an actor while demonstrating your suitability for a specific program.
- • You will also receive detailed assistance in preparing your audition material. The focus is on creating a vivid imagined relationship with a scene partner so that spontaneous, truthful behavior can emerge naturally in the audition. All work at the Studio is grounded in the Meisner Technique, and our coaches are highly experienced in helping actors apply the principles Sanford Meisner developed with the Group Theatre and at the Neighborhood Playhouse to the audition process.
- • When a song is required, this program supports you in selecting appropriate musical material and in learning how to interpret the song through the meaning of the lyrics. For non singing actors, confidence is built by approaching songs as monologues first, with melody as a secondary element.
- • You will also receive guidance in completing the final draft of your personal statement. This document is a critical component of the application process and should clearly articulate your readiness and suitability for professional training.
- • Finally, you will be coached in navigating the audition room with confidence and clarity. This includes understanding what to expect in the initial audition round, how call backs function, and how to best meet the expectations of the auditors.
Please note: This program is intended for actors with prior training and experience. It is not designed for beginning actors with little or no acting background.
You must apply at least three months prior to your first scheduled audition. It is best to start the process at least six to twelve months prior.
