Chelsea Repertory Company is the Studio’s resident theatre ensemble—an uncommon model in New York actor training. Founded to bridge mentorship and practice, Chelsea Rep unites professional company members with students at every stage of their development, ensuring that training moves seamlessly from classroom to stage. Productions are mounted year-round under the auspices of the Company, making it a true resident theatre where all performances are created from a shared foundation: a common training vocabulary rooted in the Studio’s Meisner-based approach.
This rare integration of school and company has established Chelsea Rep as a living, breathing theatre community in New York City. Alumni—many now seasoned professionals—regularly return to perform, collaborate, teach and mentor emerging actors, strengthening the artistic lineage of the Studio while offering students a direct link to the professional world.
Each season, Chelsea Rep produces a compelling blend of classic works and bold new voices. From masterworks of American and world theatre to original adaptations such as Knoxville, 1915—John Grabowski’s stage version of James Agee’s A Death in the Family—to brand-new scripts developed in the Studio’s playwriting program, Chelsea Rep champions both tradition and innovation. Its annual e-Merging Artists One-Act Play Festival and Summerfest One-Act Play Festival also provide directing students with the invaluable opportunity to stage their own one-acts, making Chelsea Rep a crucible for actors, directors, and playwrights alike.
