"When you can assume that your audience holds the same beliefs as you do, you can relax a little and use more normal means of talking to it; when you have to assume that it does not, then you have to make your vision apparent by shock; to the hard of hearing you shout, and for the almost-blind, you draw large and startling figures."
- Flannery O’Connor
The two-tiered Directing Workshop program offers opportunities for new and inexperienced stage and film directors to work with a seasoned director. Studio associate director John Grabowski heads the Directors Program and comes to the work with 30 plus years experience of teaching and having directed over 30 productions. Directors are encouraged to continue working on directing plays at the studio beyond their class time.
The Directing 1 class taught by Studio associate director John Grabowski is ideal for new stage and film directors seeking a forum in which to try their ideas and gain practical experience. The Directing 1 class offers directors the opportunity to: Gain experience in analyzing a play; Learn to make spatial; and conceptual decisions; Work with actors with that conceptual base in mind; Observe the actor's process in Studio acting classes.
The Directing 2 class offers directors the opportunity to actually mount a one-act play for a workshop production to be presented by the Chelsea Rep LAB in public performances as part of the annual DIRECTOR'S CHOICE - SPRINGFEST ONE-ACT PLAY FESTIVAL during the month of May. Directing 1 is a prerequisite.
In all areas of acting, auditioning, public speaking, directing and playwriting, the Studio offers private coaching for actors working on theatre/film/TV roles, or those needing audition preparation. Also for people seeking monologue, scene study classwork, voice & speech, accent reduction and/or MFA graduate program preparation.
